Brenda - Volunteer Spotlight

Why did I start volunteering with Wayland Main Street?
I believe it was in October of 2011 I was reading an article, in the Penasee Globe, about the Wayland Main Street Program.  I thought about the many times I have complained about what Downtown Wayland doesn’t have.  I then thought well, nothing is going to change if people don’t get involved and work for a change.  I decided to put my money where my mouth was.  Well, I don’t have much money but I do have heart, time, energy and the ability to work.  I called the then Main Street Manager, Alicia, and she gave me brochures about the program and explained how it works.  I thought this is something I can really get behind.

Over the years my dad has told many stories about what Downtown Wayland was like when he was younger and I remember what it was like when I was younger.  It was a thriving town.  I would love to see it restored to its former vibrancy.  There is an old saying “You’re either part of the solution or you’re part of the problem”.  I hope to be part of the solution.  I decided right then I was going to jump on board and volunteer to be a part of the transformation of our community.

The Wayland Main Street Program is a volunteer driven program.  We have a nucleus of dedicated hardworking volunteers.  We have made great strides since the program was implemented.  However, can you imagine what we would accomplish if every able bodied, and/or able minded person, not just in the City of Wayland, but anyone who calls Wayland home (people whose children go to school there, shop there and/or work there) volunteered just eight (8) hours per year?  The possibilities are endless.

The Michigan Main Street Program was honest from the beginning.  This is not going to be an instant gratification accomplishment.  It’s not going to be a two or five year program.  This is a 10 year or 20 year program.  God willing I will be there the entire time working alongside some amazing volunteers who are pulling together for the common goal of building a legacy and celebrating our community.
