Tell us the story of OpenRoad Brewery. How did you get started?
We like craft beer, A LOT. We like it so much that we became home brewers. Home brewing turned into meetings with other home brewers and drinking A LOT of craft beer. Which took us on an adventure all over Michigan, camping out with other brewers and getting a taste of the craft beer life. Our love of the craft beer adventure and hitting the open road eventually led us home again to the best business venture possible: a brewery in our home town of Wayland! The OpenRoad Brewery is a home away from home where you can drink craft beer, meet some neat people and get a taste of adventure from the open road.

Describe your business. What do you provide in this market?
We are Wayland’s first and only Micro Brewery. We only sell beers we make, and we brew all of our beers on site. Our beer selection runs from true to style American Ales to German Heffe’s and Belgian Tripel’s. We always have 10 to 12 beers on tap. Our IPA LOT, Road Rage DBL IPA, and Citradisiac Pale Ale are very popular. We also have an excellent food menu. All Beef Angus dogs with specialty toppings, paninis, and quesadillas are our fare. Our Mug Club is over 300 strong and growing.

Why Downtown Wayland?
Wayland is where my kids grew up, in fact, my son’s is a partner in the brewery. But, we are not just a father son brewery, my daughter is also very involved. We couldn’t think of a better place to be.

How have you seen Wayland Main Street supporting local businesses?
Wayland Main Street shows great support for downtown businesses that want to freshen up their facades. We hope to be undertaking a face lift very soon.

What’s unique about your business that you can’t get at a chain or online?
We brew our own beer and we are pretty good at it. We are also proud of the friendly, fast, personal level of service you will get at the brewery.

Why do you think it’s important to shop local?
When you visit the brewery you might run into your neighbors or your friends from town, or you can make new friends. Having a local place to gather and socialize is very special. To do it with a fresh local made beer is really special.

Do you have any events or programming that you would like people to know about?
We are always up to something, follow us on Facebook. We just got a cask, so we will be brewing some Old Ale style beers. But the big event we are planning is our 1 Year Anniversary! On July 15th we will have a street party in front of the brewery on Main Street from 6 pm to 11 pm. Live music, pig roast and games plus we are auctioning off Mug Club #149 (because Wayland is 149 years old) and the proceeds will go to charity.
